Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) is a non-governmental heritage organisation with headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. CHwB has one Balkan regional office in Sarajevo and one local office each in Pristina and Tirana.
Heritage Without Borders partnered with CHwB to support a week-long conservation training workshop in September 2011 at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. Local CHwB staff facilitated the administration of the summer school and three conservation professionals from HWB led a series of lectures and practical training using the museum’s collections.
The objectives of the summer school were to:
- Train museum staff from across the Balkans in basic conservation skills
- Improve storage conditions in National Museum of Bosnia & Herzegovina
- Assess future conservation training needs in Balkans
- Pilot an HWB project, testing methodology and practicalities
This course enabled 25 individuals from museums from across the Balkans region to receive specialised training from HWB volunteers.
Representatives included participants from Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Colombia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The feedback received from local course participants was overwhelmingly positive. HWB and CHwB organised the next summer school in Tirana, Albania in 2012. The summer school was again a huge success for both organisations. With involvement of local partners and funders, we are currently discussing various options for taking our work in the Balkans forward and building on the successes of this conservation course.
